Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the visual and refractive results, safety and efficacy indexes of refractive lens exchange with bilateral implantation of the Precizon Presbiopic® (Ophtec BV, Groningen, The Netherlands) multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) for presbyopia correction.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Hospital de Braga, Braga, Portugal

Methods:

Prospective, non-randomized clinical trial, which included 20 eyes of 10 patients submitted to refractive bilateral lens exchange with Precizon Presbiopic® IOL implantation. Patients included were required to be aged above 50 years old and to have a keratometric astigmatism below 1,50D. The minimum follow-up was 3 months with the following outcome measures: monocular and binocular, corrected and uncorrected distance, intermediate (70 cm) and near (40 cm) visual acuities, manifest refraction, binocular defocus curve and contrast sensitivity at photopic and scotopic luminance levels. IOL power was calculated using partial coherence laser interferometry (Zeiss IOL Master®; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Germany).

Results:

A total of 20 eyes of 10 patients were included and followed for 3 months; mean age was 62,875 ± 8,54 years. The mean residual sphere was 0,3 ± 0,23 D, with 100% of eyes within ± 0,50 D. Mean uncorrected and corrected monocular distance visual acuity was 0,75 ± 0,18 and 0,90 ± 0,09 (decimal Snellen), respectively. Distance corrected visual acuity for intermediate and near was 0,88 ± 0,10 and 0,55 ± 0,10 (decimal Snellen), respectively. Mesopic and scotopic contrast sensitivity values were within a normal range; no halos or glare were reported by the patients.

Conclusions:

The Precizon CTF Presbiopic® IOL is a safe and effective solution for presbyopia correction, offering good distance, intermediate and near visual performances. The absence of dysphotopsic phenomena is a main advantage when compared with traditional diffractive bifocal or trifocal IOL’s.
