Abstract Details

Purpose:

To prospectively evaluate long-term effectiveness of implantation of a small-aperture IC-8 intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting:

Asian Eye Institute

Methods:

This is a prospective, non-randomized study of 32 eyes of 22 patients.Twelve subjects were implanted contralaterally with an IC-8 IOL (Acufocus, USA) in one eye and an aspheric monofocal IOL in the fellow eye and 10 subjects were implanted bilaterally with the IC-8 IOL. Visual acuity results are available for all patients at 1 year, 16 patients at 2 years and 11 patients at 3 years. Uncorrected distance (UCDVA), intermediate (UCIVA) and near (UCNVA) visual acuities are reported in logMAR + standard deviation.

Results:

Mean UCDVA, UCIVA and UCNVA were 0.14 ± 0.07, 0.07 ± 0.07 and 0.11 ± 0.07 in the IC-8 IOL eyes at 1 year, respectively. At 2 years, patients achieved 0.02 ± 0.06, 0.02 ± 0.11, and 0.09 ± 0.08 for UCDVA, UCIVA and UCNVA, respectively. Scores remained consistent for UCDVA, UCIVA and UCNVA at 0.02 ± 0.04, 0.08 ± 0.11, and 0.13 ± 0.10, at 3 years, respectively.

Conclusions:

The IC-8 IOL extends depth of focus for cataract patients with near, intermediate and distance vision results remaining constant out to three years post-op.
