Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the visual outcomes and quality of vision after implantation of a new diffractive extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL. We compare the results with those of a former diffractive EDOF IOL.

Setting:

All implantations and follow-ups were performed at the Breyer-Kaymak-Klabe Eyesurgery in Duesseldorf, Germany, which is part of the International Vision Correcton Research Center Network (IVCRC.net).

Methods:

This retrospective analysis of consecutive cases comprises results after implantation of the new diffractive EDOF IOL AT LARA 829 (Carl Zeiss Meditec) in 22 eyes and of the (toric) diffractive TECNIS Symfony (Abbott Medical Optics) in 54 eyes. Follow up exams were performed at 3 months after surgery. Results for manifest refraction (phoropter), visual acuity (ETDRS charts), defocus curves, contrast sensitivity (Optec 6500), halo & glare (halo & glare simulator, CZM) and a patient questionnaire (QoV, McAlinden et al.) were documented.

Results:

For eyes with target refraction emmetropia, the mean monocular postoperative UDVA at 3 months was (0.10+-0.13)logMAR and (0.05+-0.12)logMAR in the Symfony and the LARA group, respectively. A deviation from target SE of at most +/-0.5D was achieved in 80% and 73% of eyes and 93% and 96% of eyes were within +/-1.0D. The defocus curves showed improved intermediate visual acuities for both EDOF IOLs with overall MIOL capacities of 75% and 69%. Halo & Glare were slightly higher than in phakic eyes but predominantly described as not disturbing after postoperative neuroadaptation was achieved.

Conclusions:

Between the 2 groups we could not detect any significant differences in the visual outcomes. With regard to clinical data AT LARA 829 and Tecnis Symfony seem to be very comparable EDOF IOLs. Considering life style aspects of most of our patients in case of a computer-based daily routine, as well as menage, handcraft or night driving, both EDOF IOLs accomplish patients’ needs.
