Abstract Details

Purpose:

Extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses (IOLs) have been developed to minimize photic phenomena while increasing the range of vision from distance to intermediate. The purpose of this study is to compare the clinical outcomes of patients bilaterally implanted with the model ME4 IOL (1.25D expected depth of focus), which has increased depth of focus but still meets the ISO optical definition of a monofocal IOL, with the clinical outcomes of patients bilaterally implanted with the model ME6 IOL (1.45D expected depth of focus).

Setting:

Augenärzte Gerl, Kretz & Kollegen, Ahaus, Germany

Methods:

In a prospective, randomized clinical trial, patients were bilaterally implanted with either the EDOF ME4 IOL with a 4 ring diffractive central profile (Santen, Japan) or with the EDOF ME6 IOL with a 4 ring diffractive central profile (Santen, Japan). Based on optical studies, the expected depth of focus is 1.25D for the ME4 and 1.45D for the ME6, while the optical performance of the ME4 follows ISO standards for a monofocal IOL. Postoperative assessments included refractive and functional outcomes (UDVA, CDVA, UIVA, DCIVA, defocus curve, contrast sensitivity), visual effects such as glare and halo, and patient satisfaction.

Results:

Both IOLs demonstrated a wide range of focus in the defocus curve analysis. There was no statistically significant difference regarding UDVA, CDVA or contrast sensitivity.

Conclusions:

Both IOLs demonstrated an extended range of vision from distance to near with minimal photic phenomena, and a high rate of patient satisfaction. The ME4 IOL, as a regulatory monofocal IOL, truly widens the range of vision to increase spectacle independence in the intermediate range.
