Dry eye and corneal biomechanics after FS-LASIK and FS-SMILE

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare theeffects of femtosecond assisted LASIK and small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) on dry eye parameters and corneal biomechanics.

Setting:

kasr alainy school of medicine,cairo university

Methods:

The study included 60 eyes of patients with myopia or myopic astigmatism presenting for refractive error correction. Femtosecond assisted LASIK group included 30 eyes and SMILE group included 30 eyes. The following tests were done for all patients preoperatively and at 3 months postoperatively: full ophthalmological examination, manifest refraction,UDVA, CDVA, corneal topography CSO topography system (CSO, Firenze, Italy), Corneal biomechanical parameters using Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA; Reichert Inc, Depew, NY), Assessment for dry eye using Schirmer test and tear break up time test (TBUT).

Results:

There was a statistically significant difference between both groups in the mean values of schirmer test (P = 0.0002) and TBUT test (P = 0.0035). The mean value of percentage change of CH Fs-SMILE group was 14.23± 17.59 and in fs-LASIK group was 18.89±7.2 with non-statistically significant difference between both groups (P = 0.1871). The mean value of percentage change of CRF Fs-SMILE group was 27.43± 16.8and in fs-LASIK group was 21.32± 17.1with non-statistically significant difference (P = 0.1682).

Conclusions:

Femtosecond small incision lenticule extraction has no superiority in terms of corneal biomechanical parameters, but it has better results in dry eye parameters at 3 months follow up duration.
