Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effect of topical application of the REFRESH OPTIVEĀ® MEGA-3 (OM3) eye drops when dosed before and/or after laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery in the eye of New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits.

Setting:

Experiments carried out at University of California, Davis Pathology analysis at School of Veterinary Medicine University of Wisconsin (Madison)

Methods:

Rabbits were assigned to groups (n=8/group; 1 drop 5X daily): Group 1, balance salt solution (BSS) for 35 days (7 days pre-surgery and 28 days postsurgery); Group 2, OM3 7 days pre-surgery, and BSS 28 days post-surgery; Group 3, BSS 7 days pre-surgery, and OM3 28 days post-surgery; Group 4, OM3 pre/post-surgery for 35 days. Right eye underwent surgery/treatment; left eye was untreated control. Anterior OCT imaging and slit lamp photography was performed day -7 (baseline), 0, 7, 21 and 28. Corneal lesions were evaluated/scored for inflammatory infiltrate in cornea and anterior chamber, stromal edema, vascularization and epithelial integrity.

Results:

Corneal opacification and stromal haze were observed at the surgical margin of the flap, while the central flap area maintained normal transparency at the end of the study. No significant differences between groups were observed by clinical and histopathological evaluations at any time point except on Day 28 in which Group 3 (mean score of 1.3) had significantly less haze than Group 1 (mean score of 0.8) (*P = 0.0387). Histologically, discrete regions of epithelial thickening were observed at the surgical margin of the stromal flaps in all groups.

Conclusions:

This animal study supports that OM3 eye drops is suitable for post-LASIK usage. These results support further work to study the use of OM3 in human post-operative care.
