Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare incision size and incision enlargement due to IOL injection after cataract surgery with different IOL delivery systems (VivinexiSert® Preloaded IOL System and UltraSert™ Pre-loaded IOL Delivery System.

Setting:

Lamxi Eye Institute, Navi Mumbai

Methods:

A total of 276 eyes of 220 patients were enrolled in the study. All eyes underwent temporal clear corneal phacoemulsification cataract surgery (INFINITI®) with 2.2mm keratome. 138 eyes underwent implantation with VivinexiSert® Preloaded IOL System and remaining 138 eyes underwent implantation with UltraSert™ Pre-loaded IOL Delivery System. Incision size was measured once at three different times during surgery by measuring caliper ie. (1) after clear corneal incision; (2) after phacoemulsification; (3) after IOL implantation. Primary outcome was to measure increase in incision size width at different times during cataract surgery which was compared between the two IOL delivery systems.

Results:

The mean increase in incision size in the Ultrasert group of patients before and after phacoemulsification was 0.0507mm (2.20mm to 2.25mm), before and after IOL implantation was 0.1159mm(2.25mm to 2.36mm).The overall increase in incision size from clear corneal incision to after IOL implantation was 0.1666mm(2.20mm to 2.36mm). The mean increase in incision size in the Vivinex group of patients before and after phacoemulsification was 0.0507mm(2.20mm to 2.25), before and after IOL implantation was 0.1177mm(2.25 to 2.36mm). The overall increase in incision size from clear corneal incision to after IOL implantation was 0.1684mm(2.20mm to 2.36mm).

Conclusions:

There was no statistical difference between the increase in incision size width during different phases of cataract surgery between the two IOL delivery systems. Incision size increase during different phases of cataract surgery showed a predicatable increase in the two IOL Delivery systems, with UltraSert™ Pre-loaded IOL Delivery System performing as well as the VivinexiSert® Preloaded IOL System.
