Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy of ‘Smart Toric plus’ intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in patients with high astigmatism and cataract after penetrating keratoplasty or keratoconus

Setting:

LJ Eye Institute, Ambala

Methods:

8 eyes of 8 patients with cataract and high regular astigmatism underwent Phacoemulsification and implantation of foldable hydrophilic acrylic IOL (ULTIMA Smart toric plus). Main outcome measures: uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) in logMAR and manifest refraction.

Results:

Mean astigmatism was 11.8D( Range 8.0- 15.34D). The mean follow- up duration was 13.5 months. All 8 eyes had significant improvement in post- operative UDVA (logMAR,1.019±0.612 to 0.568±0.305; P= 0.0001) and CDVA(logMAR,0.885±0.592 to 0.197±0.102; P= 0.0001). The degree of astigmatism was also reduced significantly. Redialling (done in three eyes) was safe and also yielded good outcomes.

Conclusions:

Customised Toric IOL appears to be a good option for patients with high astigmatism.
