Capsule fixated EDOF IOL: benefits and visual outcomes

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Document the efficacy and potential benefits of capsule fixation of a segmental refractive EDOF IOL - Femtis

Setting:

Vision Eye Institute: University of NSW

Methods:

20 eyes of 10 patients were implanted with the Femtis (Oculentis) capsule fixated refractive assymetric segmental EDOF IOL. Visual outcomes were documented and an objective analysis of unwanated visual phenomena quantified using a computer based glare and halo simulator. Stablitiy of long term IOL position was analysed using clinical photography image analysis.

Results:

Visual outcomes were excellent though no statistically significant benefit was demonstrated compared with the non capsule fixated version of this IOL. IOL stability was demonstrated showing no significant shift in lens centration over the monitoring period. Importantly the anterior capsular rhexis was shown to have a stable shape, size and position with IOL fixation. Unwanted visual phenomena ( glare and halo) were significantly less that those documented with other multifocal and EDOF lens designs. There were no cases of negative dysphotopsias in the calspule fixated IOL patients.

Conclusions:

Capsule fixation of IOLs offers potential benefit in predictability of IOL centration, control of capsular phimosis, elimination of negative dysphotopsia and potentiall better refractive predictability. In the cohort we demonstrate safety with a capsule fixated EDOF IOL and stability of lens position over time. Capsule fixation of IOLs is a safe and sensible improvement over existing IOL design and this may be particularly beneficial for more complex optical designs such as EDOF IOLs.
