Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze the sharpness of the posterior optic edge profile and edge thickness of intraocular lenses (IOLs) marketed with a square-edged profile.

Setting:

Image & Analysis Unit, University of Brighton & Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS trust, Brighton, UK.

Methods:

Twelve square-edged 20.0 diopter IOLs of different manufacture, design, and material were selected. All the lens were scanned using previously published standardized technique using environmental scanning electron microscopy. Posterior optic edges of all IOLs were scanned at a magnification of x500. Local radius-of-curvature of the posterior optic edges were measured by using Adobe Photoshop software (Photoshop 2017, Adobe,USA). Optic edge thickness was also measured from the electron micrographs.

Results:

The radius-of-curvature ranged from 4.6 to 19.7μ. Except for B&L Incise (7.7μ) all hydrophilic IOLs [Cutting Edge (10.6μ), Human Optics Asphira (13.7μ), RayOne (14.0μ), Zeiss CT-Asphina 404 (13.7μ)] had radius-of-curvature >10.0μ. Hydrophobic IOLs, B&L One Crystal (4.7μ), Hoya Vivenex iSert (7.6μ) and Zeiss CT Lucia (4.6μ) were <10.0μ [except the B&L Envista (19.7μ), B&L Eye Cee One (13.7μ) Hoya iSert (19.7μ) and Hoya PS AF-1 (19.7μ)]. Thinnest and thickest optic edge of hydrophilic IOLs were: B&L Incise (218.2μ) and RayOne (477.1μ), whereas for hydrophobic IOLs were: Hoya Vivenex iSert (150.5μ) and Zeiss CTLucia (344.1μ) respectively.

Conclusions:

Commercially marketed square-edged IOLs differed in the sharpness of the posterior optic edge. More hydrophobic acrylic IOLs have sharper posterior optic square edge than most hydrophilic acrylic IOLs. However, the quality of square edge profiles of hydrophilic IOLs has improved in past decade compared to our previous publication.
