Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate posterior capsule opacification (PCO) and Nd:YAG capsulotomy rates in two hydrophobic, acrylic intraocular lenses (IOL) with similar characteristics 3 years postoperative.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University of Vienna

Methods:

101 patients (58 women, 43 men) with senile bilateral cataract were implanted with the Acrysof SA60AT in one eye and the Zaraccom Focus Force AS60125 in the other eye. Both IOLs are made from hydrophobic acrylic with a discontinuous square optic edge. PCO was objectively evaluated with the Automated Quantification of After Cataract (AQUA) program, from 0 (no PCO) to 10 (severe PCO). IOL characteristics (anterior fibrosis, presence of glistenings, posterior lens-capsule distance) were subjectively graded at the slit lamp. Nd:YAG capsulotomy rates were assessed. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was tested with a Snellen chart.

Results:

Mean follow up time was 37.75 ± 1.88 months. Nd:YAG capsulotomy rates after 3 years were 9 (14%) for the SA60AT IOL and 26 (40%) for the AS60125 IOL, respectively (p<0.001). Mean BCVA was 0.06 ± 0.1 logMar in SA60AT eyes and 0.16 ± 0.2 logMar in AS60125 eyes (p=0.001). Mean AQUA PCO rates for both IOLs were 1.66 ± 1.60 and 3.45 ± 1.98, respectively (p<0.001). Glistenings were significantly more often present in the SA60AT IOL. 95% of SA60AT and 5% of AS60125 IOLs presented glistenings in the optic zone (p=0.001).

Conclusions:

After 3 years the SA60AT IOL showed significantly less PCO and had significantly lower Nd:YAG capsulotomy rates. BCVA was significantly reduced in AS60125 eyes compared to SA60AT eyes.
