Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the rate of endophthalmitis before and after the use of intracameral moxifloxacin prophylaxis in cataract surgery patients.

Setting:

Aravind eye hospital, Coimbatore, Tamil nadu, India

Methods:

This was a retrospective analysis considering the one year period before and after the start of routine intracameral moxifloxacin prophylaxis for cataract surgery patients. The endophthalmits rates were statistically analysed in these two periods and also in the phacoemulsification and SICS groups and the paying and charity section.

Results:

There were 57186 patients in the period that did not receive intracameral moxifloxacin prophylaxis and 55505 patients in the group which did. There was statistically significant reduction in the incidence of endophthalmitis from 0.09% to 0.03% between the two groups (p value<0.001). There was fourfold and threefold reduction in the rate of endophthalmitis in the phacoemulsification and manual small incision cataract surgery group respectively. The paying and charity section also showed similar reduction in endophthalmitis rates.

Conclusions:

The incidence of endophthalmitis was three times less after the use of intracameral moxifloxacin prophylaxis for cataract surgery. So, intracameral moxifloxacin should be considered for routine prophylaxis in cataract surgery patients.
