A new step in SMILE surgery to differentiate the posterior and anterior lenticular planes

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze a new method to differentiate the posterior and anterior lenticular planes in SMILE surgery

Setting:

Casablanca laser vision, clinic Val d 'Anfa

Methods:

31 patients (62 eyes) underwent SMILE surgery with VISUMAX technology (Carl Zeiss meditec). Two "differentiator" devices were used. Before the dissection of the anterior plane, one device was inserted through the incision above the anterior plane of the lenticule, and the second one, below the posterior plane of the lenticule. The first device was removed when the dissection of the anterior plane beginned. The second one, when the spatula entered in space below the posterior plane.

Results:

this method of differentiating lenticular planes during SMILE, enabled the surgeon to recognize anterior and posterior planes of the lenticule, to dissect always the anterior plane first, and to facilitate other step of the surgery. All eyes were operated without any complication.

Conclusions:

The use of 'differentiator'' devices during SMILE surgery, is a safe and effective method, wich help surgeons to recognize both planes of the lenticule and to prevent intraoperative complications.
