Abstract Details

Purpose:

The purpose of this clinical study is to compare clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction after bilateral implantation of two trifocal non-toric intraocular lenses (IOLs), the POD F and POD F GF (both PhysIOL, Liège, Belgium). The two IOLs have a very similar optic design but differ in the IOL material (hydrophilic vs. hydrophobic)

Methods:

In this ongoing study, 50 subjects with cataracterous eyes and regular corneal astigmatism <1.0D receive bilateral IOL implantation with either hydrophilic or hydrophobic trifocal intraocular lenses (POD F and POD F GF, both PhysIOL, Liège, Belgium). Manifest refraction, photopic and mesopic visual acuity (far, intermediate, near, using ETDRS and Radner Vissum charts), defocus curves and contrast sensitivity were compared with follow-up at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months postoperative. Additionally, a questionnaire based on NEI VFQ-25 was evaluated after the final visit.

Results:

After one third of the study, the results show that both IOLs achieve refractive outcomes close to emmetropia across all follow-up visits (p<0.05). Postoperative mean CDVA, DCIVA, DCNVA in logMAR are 0.01±0.07, 0.07±0.07, -0.03±0.05 respectively for POD F and 0.01±0.02, 0.10±0.07, 0.02±0.03 respectively for POD F GF. Both defocus curves show a wide defocus range with visual acuities ≤0.2 logMAR from -3.1D to 0.9D (hydrophilic) and -2.9D to 1.0D (hydrophobic) without significant differences between the IOLs. Contrast sensitivity is close to physiological values with no significant differences between the lenses. The questionnaire shows high satisfaction rates (mean score: 94±13).

Conclusions:

Implantation of the hydrophilic POD F and hydrophobic POD F GF trifocal IOLs allows for a safe and efficient restoration of near, intermediate, and far visual acuity on patients undergoing cataract surgery. The monocular and binocular visual acuity and contrast sensitivity outcomes show no statistically significant difference in the optical and clinical performance of the IOLs. The patient satisfaction is equally high with both lenses. In conclusion, the availability of trifocal IOLs with very good clinical performance differing mainly in the material, allows the surgeon to choose the preferred IOL material based on the individual preference and patients’ needs.
