Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare qualitative and quantitative visual outcomes after bilateral refractive lens exchange followed by implantation of two intraocular trifocal lenses (IOLs): the AT LISA® tri839MP and the AcrySof® IQ PanOptix™

Setting:

Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto (CHUP) - Porto, Portugal

Methods:

Retrospective study including 48 eyes (24 patients). Refractive lens exchange followed by bilateral implantation of AT LISA® tri839MP (group 1, n=26eyes) or AcrySof® IQ PanOptix™ (group 2, n=22eyes) was performed. Best-corrected and uncorrected visual acuity (BCVA and UCVA, logMAR) – 3 distances - and slit lamp biomicroscopy were evaluated. Vision quality was assessed applying a modified Cataract TyPESpecification questionnaire and by an optical quality analysis system - HD Analyzer® - measuring the objective scatter index (OSI), potential visual acuity (PVA) at fotopic, mesopic and scotopic conditions, modulation transfer function (MTF) and tear film (TF) analysis. Minimum follow-up was 12 months

Results:

There were no preoperative differences between groups in all the parameters evaluated. Postoperative UCVA’s for distance, intermediate and near were slightly better in group 2, without statistically significant differences (p=0,70). OSI, PVA in the 3 conditions and MTF values were significantly better in group 2 (p<0,001 for all). The variation in OSI during TF analysis was higher in group 1 (p<0,001). Questionnaire analysis showed better quality of vision in group 2 patients: average score 49/60 (group 1) and 58/60 (group 2); less glare and halos complaints (group 2). Only one patient (group 1) reported spectacles dependency

Conclusions:

Postoperative UCVA for different distances was similar with AT LISA® tri839MP or AcrySof® IQ PanOptix™ IOLs implantation. Independency of spectacles for different distances was achieved in almost all patients. However AcrySof® IQ PanOptix™ IOL provided better quality of vision in both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Patient's satisfaction was higher with AcrySof® IQ PanOptix™ IOL
