Abstract Details

Purpose:

Authors are investigating visual acuity and visual disturbances in patients after cataract surgery with implantation of Tecnis Symfony Extended Range of Vision (EROV) intraocular lens (ZXR00) in the second eye. In the first eye, Tecnis 1-piece monofocal intraocular lens (ZCB00) was implanted during the cataract surgery.

Setting:

Eye Hospital Svjetlost, Zagreb, Croatia Medical School, University of Rijeka

Methods:

Sixteen patients who have Tecnis 1-piece monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) in one eye and Tecnis Symfony EROV IOL in other eye were followed for at least six months. Uncorrected distant, intermediate (at 66 cm) and near visual acuity were measured for each lens and binocularly. Visual disturbances and spectacle independence were also recorded.

Results:

Patients with Tecnis1-piece monofocal IOL had mean uncorrected distant visual acuity (UDVA) 0,89±0,14, uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) 0,50±0,22 and uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA) 0,53±0,14. Mean spherical equivalent (SE) for far was -0,35±0,27D. Patients with Tecnis Symfony EROV IOL achieved UDVA of 0,95±0,09, UNVA of 0,86±0,15 and UIVA of 0,94±0,10. Mean SE was -0,23±0,18D. Binocular uncorrected visual acuities were 0,98±0,07 for distant, 0,90±0,12 for near and 0,95±0,09 for intermediate distance. All patients reported mild halos and glare. Three patients, sometimes, had to wear reading glasses for small print.

Conclusions:

Implantation of Tecnis Symfony EROV IOL in patients with monofocal IOL in previously operated eye is viable option. Patients have a high level of spectacle independence and acceptable rate of visual disturbances.
