Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the visual outcomes three months after cataract surgery in patients receiving bilateral implantation of a trifocal or an EDOF intraocular lenses (IOLs)

Setting:

Clinica Rementeria. Madrid. Spain

Methods:

Consecutive patients undergoing bilateral cataract surgery or lensectomy were evaluated for inclusion in the study. We compared ninety-eight patients that received a trifocal IOL versus thirty-six patients that received an EDOF IOL. Three months after surgery, an extensive ophthalmic evaluation was performed, including photopic mono- and binocular visual acuity (VA) (LogMAR) for far (4 meters), intermediate (60 cm) and near (33 cm) distances. A binocular defocus curve was performed as well as binocular contrast sensitivity in photopic conditions.

Results:

Uncorrected mean monocular VA for the trifocal group was 0.06 for far,0.22 for intermediate and 0.06 for near distances;binocular VA improved to 0.02 for far, 0.15 for intermediate and 0.00 for near distances.In the EDOF group,monocular VA was 0.09 for far, 0.28 for intermediate and 0.18 for near distances,with binocular values of 0.08 for far, 0.22 for intermediate and 0.15 for near distances (P<0.05 except for binocular distance VA).The binocular defocus curve showed a better visual function for the trifocal group.Three months postop,90.6% of patients in the trifocal group versus 60% in the EDOF group were spectacle-free for near.

Conclusions:

Trifocal IOLs seem to provide a better visual function for all distances compared to EDOF IOLs, with a higher rate of patients being completely spectacle-free three months after surgery.
