Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare postoperative uncorrected visual acuity at far, intermediate, and near distance between the Symfony and AT LISA tri 839MP IOLs.

Setting:

Single-centre randomized controlled trial performed at the University Eye Clinic Maastricht, the The Netherlands

Methods:

a total of thirty patients underwent bilateral cataract extraction followed by bilateral implantation of either the Symfony or AT LISA tri 839MP IOL. The primary outcome was to compare both IOLs designs in term of uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA, measured at 66cm) in both photopic and mesopic circumstances. Secondary outcomes were to compare uncorrected visual acuity at far (UDVA) and near (UNVA) distance in both photopic and mesopic circumstances, defocus curves, percentage of halos/glare, and contrast sensitivity. In the Symfony group slight (myopic) micromonovision was targeted.

Results:

Postoperatively, the mean spherical equivalent was 0.13±0.32D and -0.42±0.67D in respectively the ATLISA and Symfony group. In photopic conditions, a significant (p<.05) better UIVA was seen in the Symfony group compared to the ATLISA group (respectively -0.02±0.03 vs. 0.01±0.03logMAR). No significant differences were seen in UDVA (0.01±0.12 (Symfony) vs. -0.05±0.07 (ATLISA) logMAR ) and UNVA (0.09±0.05 (Symfony) vs. 0.04±0.07 (ATLISA) logMAR). Less than 10% of patients in both groups experienced disabling glare. A higher percentage of patients experienced disabling halos in the ATLISA group compared to the Symfony group (respectively 38%vs.21%).

Conclusions:

A significant difference in mean UIVA was seen between the Symfony and AT LISA tri 839MP IOL. No significant differences were seen between both groups in terms of far and near uncorrected visual acuity at either photopic or mesopic circumstances. Both groups showed a significant decrease in visual acuity at any distance under mesopic circumstances. A higher percentage of patients experienced disabling halos in the AT LISA tri 839MP group compared to the Symfony group.
