Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare surgical outcomes of combined procedure Descement's endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) and cataract surgery with versus without using ocular viscoelastic device (OVD).

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital Kralovske Vinohrady, Prague, Czech Republic

Methods:

The retrospective study comprised 16 eyes of 16 patients who underwent DMEK and phacoemulsification with implantation of monofocal IOL in one single procedure. 8 eyes underwent the standard surgery with using OVD (group 1) and 8 eyes without any using OVD (goup 2). All patients had corneal endothelial dystrophy and presence of cataract. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), immediate and early postoperative complications were evaluated.

Results:

After one month the mean postoperative UDVA in group 1 was 0,4 ± 0,3, in group 2 was 0,5 ± 0,2. CDVA was 0,6 ± 0,4 in group 1 and 0,6 ± 0,1 in group 2 one month postoperatively. 25 % of eyes required rebubbling in both groups. There was one complication peroperatively due to the mature cataract in group 2. The anterior vitrectomy with IOL implantation to ciliary sulcus was done.

Conclusions:

According to preliminary results, combined procedure DMEK and cataract surgery with using OVD doesn't seem to be associated with higher number of rebubbling or other early postoperative complications than without using OVD.
