Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the visual quality of presbyopic patients who underwent LASIK (MEL 80-Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany) with aspheric ablation profile and micro-monovision for the correction of presbyopia.

Setting:

Hospital Universitario QuironSalud, Pozuelo de Alarcón, Madrid, Spain.

Methods:

Patients were assigned into three differents groups based of preoperative spherical equivalent. Surgical treatment modulates the spherical aberration (SA) in both eyes depending on the preoperative refraction. A slight myopia between -0.75 diopters (D) and -1.5 D in the non-dominant eye was also programmed. Visual acuity, SA, stereopsis, contrast sensitivity (SC), visual quality parameters were measured preoperative and at the end of the study. We also analysed the efficacy, safety and predictability of the procedure.

Results:

Fifty patients (100 eyes) underwent this procedure. The mean age was 46.84 ± 4.17 years. After surgery, stereopsis was improved in group III (p=0.025) and no changes in the SC, except for a slight increase at 18 cycles per degree in the group II (p = 0.021). Group I and II presented a better visual quality after the surgical procedure (OQAS value 100%, 20%, 9% and Strehl Ratio). The predictability within 0.5 D in the dominant eye was 92% and within -0.75 D and 1.50 D in the non- dominant eye was 68%. No complications were recorded during the study.

Conclusions:

Presbyopic treatment aspheric micro-monovision ablation profile is a surgical alternative that holds minimal changes in stereopsis, contrast sensitivity and visual quality. It is also a safe, effective and predictable technique in the correction of presbyopia.
