Abstract Details

Purpose:

We decided to investigate the reason why some unsatisfied patients give unfavourable judgments about the cataract surgical procedure they have undergone in particular in those cases in which a thorough ophthalmological visit does not show relevant surgical malpractice or surgical complications.

Setting:

Centro chirurgico Bufalini ,Firenze (I) Casa di Cura Villa Donatello ,Firenze(I) Casa di Cura San Rossore ,Pisa(I)

Methods:

We analyzed a series of unfavourable results of cataract surgery in patients 'judements and we studied the reason why the judgment had been such by administering an ad hoc questionnaire . 50 questionnaires were reviewed ,corresponding to 50 surgical procedures performed in Tuscany in the years 2016 -2017 in 14 different hospitals or out-patient surgical centers

Results:

Uncorrect expectation about surgery caused many unfavourable judgment in many cases of cataract surgery which had been executed in a correct way.

Conclusions:

Clear long and time consuming discussions with patients who undergo cataract surgery are always worth while to do,because they can prevent uncorrect expectations and the sublesquent unfavourable judgements of patients about surgical results of cataract
