Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the safety and efficacy of tissue addition for post-LASIK ectasia by implanting a lenticule extracted from small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE).

Setting:

Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University (Shanghai, People’s Republic of China).

Methods:

Seven eyes of 7 patients with post-LASIK ectasia were included in this prospective study. A Sinskey hook was used to open the edge of the microkeratome flap. Hyperopic lenticules extracted from SMILE donor with different cryopreservation period were placed on the exposed stromal bed, and then the flap was repositioned. Patients were followed up at 1 month, 3 months and 6 months, 1 year, 2 years after surgery. Main outcome measurements included uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuity, manifest refraction, topography, corneal posterior elevation, optical coherence topography (OCT) and confocal microscopy.

Results:

At the last visit, the refraction in 7 eyes was improved compared to preoperative refraction and remained stable. The front corneal power was significantly flattened. The OCT images showed that the lenticule demarcation lines were blurred and the density of the lenticule was similar to that of the surrounding corneal stroma. The central corneal thickness increased significantly compared to preoperative values.

Conclusions:

Implantation of an allogenic lenticule may be an option in the treatment of post-LASIK ectasia.
