Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate refractive, topometric, pachymetric, and visual rehabilitation changes induced by anterior surface normalization for keratoconus by corneal wavefront-guided (CW) excimer laser ablation in conjunction with corneal cross-linking (CXL).

Setting:

Veni-Vidi Eye Center, Istanbul, Turkey

Methods:

Thirty eyes of 20 keratoconic cases subjected to the procedure were studied for visual acuity, keratometry, pachymetry, and anterior surface irregularity indices by wavefront analysis system.

Results:

The mean age of the patients was 31.18 years (range 21 to 56 years) and the mean follow-up was 28.5 ± 7.5 months (range 6 to 40 months). Pre-operatively, all eyes had irregular astigmatism ranging from 0.25 to 6.00 diopters (D). The means of pre- and post- operative RMS of high order aberrations were 2.23 ± 1.12 and 1.27 ± 0.86 (p=0.006). The means of pre- and post- operative uncorrected and corrected visual acuities were 0.16±0.08, 0.28 ±0.2 and 0.43 ±0.28, 0.79±0.21 Snellen lines respectively (p1=0.09, p2=0.001).

Conclusions:

Three years’ outcomes has demonstrated that the procedure is a safe and effective method to arrest keratectasia progression and to improve corneal regularity in keratoconus management.
