Femtosecond laser implantation of a 355-degree intrastromal corneal ring segment in keratoconus: 1 year follow-up

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the outcomes of femtosecond laser–assisted implantation of a 355-degree intracorneal ring (ICR) (Keraring) in patients with keratoconus

Setting:

Future Femtolaser Center, Sohag

Methods:

A Prospective case series of 27 eyes of 15 patients of keratoconus had implantation of the 355-degree ICR keraring after tunnel creation with a femtosecond laser. The uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities, sphere, cylinder, manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE), mean keratometry (K), steep K, flat K were evaluated preoperatively and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively, all complications are reported

Results:

27 eyes of 15 patients. The mean UDVA improved from 0.95 ± 0.45 (logMAR to 0.53 ± 0.35 logMAR (P = .001) , the mean CDVA from 0.35 ± 0.11 logMAR to 0.20 ± 0.19 logMAR (P = .09). The mean sphere from −6.02 ± 3.65 D to −3.11 ± 2.47 D, the mean cylinder −6.23 ± 2.14 D to −3.72 ± 2.47 D, The mean K decreased from 56.67 ± 4.44 D to 48.95 ± 3.89 D (P < .001). 9 eyes (33.3%) reported glare , six eyes 22.2% reported ICR extrusion after 6 months ended by ICR explanation

Conclusions:

Implantation of a 355-degree intracorneal keraring using femtosecond laser improved the visual, refractive, and topographic parameters in keratoconic patients. With high rate of ICR extrusion and instability.
