Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the changes and relationship between retinal thickness (RT) and visual function before and after ICL surgery

Setting:

Shanghai General Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine

Methods:

We enrolled the right eye of 33 patients with high myopia and without other ophthalmic or systemic diseases who were suitable for ICL. The RT was measured at distances of 0.5, 1.5 and 3 mm to the fovea preoperative and at 1 month postoperative respectively. Other data collected included demographic information (age, sex, and refractive error), the amplitude of accommodation (AA), intraocular pressure, axial length, corneal thickness, and surgical parameters. The data were analyzed with a paired Student’s t-test, stepwise linear regression, and correlation analysis

Results:

Overall 33 patients were enrolled in this study, including male 16 and female 17. The RT was significantly thicker postoperatively compared with preoperative RT (p<0.01) (Fig.1). The AA significantly increased postoperatively (p<0.01) (Fig.2). The variation in RT correlated with the change in spherical refraction equivalent(p<0.05) (Fig.3,4,5).

Conclusions:

The RT increased following ICL surgery and the visual function was improved at 1 month after the surgery. The mechanism of increased RT maybe caused by relaxation of accommodation. The increased RT measurements we measured after surgery seem to be correlated with the alteration in spherical refraction equivalent. The exact mechanism for this change is not clear, while we examined several possibilities including magnification changes, errors in OCT analysis and IOP, none of these seem to be a likely cause.
