Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine and compare the incidence of neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy, due to posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after phaco refractive surgery with two types of diffractive lens implant

Setting:

Refractive Surgery Department. Institut CatalĂ  de Retina. Barcelona (Spain)

Methods:

Retrospective chart review of patients, having uneventful bilateral phaco refractive surgery with subsequent implantation of a diffractive intraocular lens: ReSTOR SA60D1 (hydrophobic asymmetric convex) and Finevision MicroF (hydrophilic biconvex). Nd:YAG rate was compared in both groups. The age, time from surgery to Nd:YAG, follow-up period, visual acuity before and after Nd:YAG were also assessed.

Results:

Charts of 396 eyes that met the inclusion criteria were included. A total of 140 eyes for the ReSTOR group and 196 eyes in the FineVision group were finaly analyzed, being the Nd:YAG rate 18.5% and 6.6% respectively. The difference in Nd:YAG rate between the groups was statistically significant higher in the ReSTOR that in the FineVision group. (P<.001). The average between surgery and the Nd:YAG laser was 348 and 417 days for the ReSTOR and FineVision groups respectively, being not statistically significant (P=.094). No significant differences were found in terms of visual acuity or demographics between the groups.

Conclusions:

In this study, the incidence rate of Nd:YAG is at least twice for the ReSTOR versus the FineVision group. The broad assumption that hydrophobic materials (ReSTOR) less likely to posterior capsule opacification than hydrophilic materials (FineVision) might be questionable. The design of the lens, the haptics and edge configuration may play a main role in the onset and the incidence of PCO.
