Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate implantation of Tecnis Symfony intraocular lens (IOL) in one eye and Tecnis Multifocal IOL with +3,25 addition in other eye after cataract or refractive lens surgery.

Setting:

Eye Hospital Svjetlost, Zagreb, Croatia Medical School, University of Rijeka, Rijeka, Croatia

Methods:

Twenty patients had a cataract or refractive lens exchange (RLE) surgery with implantation of Tecnis Symfony IOL in the first eye and Tecnis Multifocal with +3,25 addition in the other eye. The bifocal lens was implanted in order to improve patients near vision if they were not satisfied after surgery at first eye. Mean age was 56,2±14.9 years, 12 females and 8 males. 8 patients had a cataract, and twelve were RLE patients. Three patients had moderate amblyopia in one eye. Uncorrected distance, intermediate and near visual acuity was measured. Follow up was at least three months.

Results:

Mean postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) with Symfony lenses was 0.85±0.19 (three amblyopic eyes) and 0.95±0.12 in Tecnis MFIOL group. Binocular UCDVA was 0.96±0.08. Mean uncorrected near visual acuity (UCNVA) in Symfony group was 0.89±0.10 and 0.96±0.08 in Tecnis MFIOL group. Binocular UCNVA was 0.96±0.08. Uncorrected binocular intermediate visual acuity (UCIVA) was 1.0 in all patients. One patient (one eye) is scheduled for LASIK due to residual astigmatism. Nd YAG laser capsulotomy was performed with four eyes. Nine patients reported dry eye symptoms.

Conclusions:

In patients who were not completely satisfied with near vision after implantation of Tecnis Symfony extended range of vision IOL in one eye, implantation of Tecnis Multifocal IOL with +3,25 D near addition is an excellent option. Patients have an excellent binocular vision at all distances without serious complaints at visual disturbances or difference in vision between eyes.
