Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report complications, post-operative visual acuity and refractive outcome in pre-operatively high myopic or high hyperopic subjects.
Setting:
Optegra Eye Hospitals, UK
Methods:
Observational case series comprising data recorded between January 1st, 2016 and December 31st, 2017. High myopia was defined as ≥ -6.0 D (up to -16.5 D) and high hyperopia as ≥ +6.0 D (up to +20.0 D). Data of 264 high myopic and 152 high hyperopic eyes was analysed. All procedures were recorded in an electronic medical record system and analysed in Excel. Identified amblyopic and post-op near monovision eyes were excluded from the analysis.
Results:
No operative complications were recorded in 99.6% and 100.0% of highly myopic and hyperopic eyes respectively whereas post-operative complications were observed more frequently in the hyperopes. Monocular uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) of 20/40 or better was achieved by 98.4% of myopic eyes 93.8% of hyperopic eyes. 20/20 or better UDVA was achieved by 68.9% of myopic eyes and 40.2% of hyperopic eyes. N6 or better was achieved by 80.3% and 71.9% of myopic and hyperopic eyes, respectively. Post-op refraction was within ±0.5D in 85.6% of myopic eyes. For hyperopic eyes post-op refraction was within ±0.5D in 75.0% of eyes.
Conclusions:
With the increasing popularity of refractive lens exchange it is important to analyse clinical outcome data for higher refractive errors. The outcomes data indicates better outcomes data was achieved for high myopic eyes in comparison to high hyperopic eyes in this cohort for most metrics assessed.
