Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report complications, post-operative visual acuity, refractive and patient reported outcomes data after presbyopia correcting intraocular lens (IOL) surgery undertaken over a period of 6.5 years.

Optegra Eye Hospitals, UK

Methods:

This observational case series comprises data recorded between January 1st, 2011 and June 30th, 2017. 12,990 procedures were performed during this period. Procedures were recorded in an electronic medical record system. Amblyopic and post-operative near monovision eyes were excluded from the analysis. The implanted IOLs included 8 designs comprising extended range of focus, diffractive trifocal and rotationally asymmetric bifocals. A questionnaire at discharge was used to assess patient reported outcomes.

Results:

There were no intra-operative complications in 99.7% of cases and visually significant post-operative complications were also infrequent. Monocular UDVA of 20/40 or better was achieved in 96.2% of eyes and 20/20 or better was achieved in 60.8%. Binocular (or best measured monocular) UDVA of 20/40 was achieved by 99.5% of patients and 20/20 or better was achieved by 77.3%. N6 or better was achieved by 89.3% of eyes. Refraction was within ±1.0D and within ±0.5D in 96.1% and 80.2% of eyes respectively. 97% of respondents were satisfied with the results and 95% would recommend the procedure to family and friends.

Conclusions:

As refractive lens exchange becomes more popular it is imperative to analyse ‘real world’ outcomes over longer periods and in large populations. The present outcomes data indicates low complication rates with visual and refractive outcomes comparable to published benchmarks and most importantly it shows patients are satisfied and willing to recommend the treatment.
