Abstract Details
Purpose:
This is the ninth annual survey on the practice patterns of Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) members in cataract surgery.
Setting:
Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada
Methods:
: In January 2017, the COS office sent an email with a link to the 2017 survey on Survey Monkey to the 271 COS members with a primary focus on cataract surgery. Two reminders were sent at 2 week intervals. Approval for the survey was obtained from the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region Ethics Board. All responses were collected anonymously.
Results:
The response rate was 35.4%. The use of Femtolaser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) has declined from 17.4% in 2016 to 11.8% in 2017. The main cataract incision has decreased over the last 5 years. The 2.2 mm wound size (40.5%) is now the most popular followed by 2.4 mm (22.6%). The use of a Toric intraocular lens (IOL) has increased markedly over the years, from 47.5% in 2009 to 90.2% in 2017. The respondents correcting astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery has increased from 43% in 2009 to 64.6% in 2017. The majority (79.3%) used a Toric IOL.
Conclusions:
The uptake of Femtolaser-assisted cataract surgery was quite impressive in its first year but has since waned. The main wound size has decreased over the years. The use of toric intraocular lenses has increased markedly over the years. This survey gives valuable information to the COS membership as to how their peers are practising.
