Abstract Details
Purpose:
To use appropriate technology and frugal innovations for training young ophthalmologist in surgical techniques to give a feel of surgical techniques and practice their skills.
Setting:
Aravind Eye Hospital Pondichery, INDIA
Methods:
We use various innovative methods for highly effective but low cost wet lab training.
In addition to using goat's eye with human cataract inserted, we also use microwaving to induce cataract in the goat's eye, with the duration of microwaving deciding grade of cataract.
With a 3D printed Eye Model as a base, we use food - potato for cataracts lens for making an eco-friendly, biodegradable, affordable teaching tool.
Virtual reality headsets are used for 3D video teaching of surgeries.
The commercial EyeSim Simulator is also used.
Results:
The postgraduate students using these innovative teaching methods found it easier to do wet lab training, reduced costs involved and learning curve intraoperatively.
Conclusions:
We found that these techniques were effective in training novice surgeons and very affordable for all training centres to adopt as part of their standard wet labs irrespective of funding.
