Purpose:
We evaluated visual outcome and postoperative aberrations of advanced surface ablation (ASA) with an irregularity-reduction software in the treatment of hyperopia.
Setting:
Eye Center - Humanitas Research Hospital
Rozzano - MIlano - Italy
Methods:
We studied retrospectively eyes who underwent ASA with Smart Pulse Technology ablation software (SPT). The SPT algorithm is a la¬ser pulse technology software aimed at reducing surface irregularity of the stromal bed at the end of treatment, proved to improve results in myopic treatments. Patients were observed for 6 months.
Results:
A total of 70 eyes of 37 patients were evaluated. Mean preoperative vision was 0.06±0.88 LogMAR, with +2.92 D±1.15 D sph (range +5.50D to +1.00D) and -1.38D ± 1.39D cyl (range, 0.00 D to -5.00 D). At 6 months, UCVA was 0.05±0.82 LogMAR, and BCVA was 0.02 LogMAR with -0.20D±0.35D sph and -0.22D±0.34D cyl. Final UDVA was same or better than preoperative BCVA in 80% of eyes. Attempted SE correction was 2.13D ±1.13D, and achieved SE correction was 1.84D ± 1.16D (n.s.). Coma and trefoil remained stable, while spherical aberration increased significantly.
Conclusions:
ASA with SPT proved to be an effective method for the treatment of hyperopia, with minimal residual defect.
