Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effect of single cyclopentolate eye drop on pain relief after photorefractive keratectomy

Setting:

Prince Sultan Medical Military City Riyadh Saudi Arabia

Methods:

Prospective randomized controlled patient masked trial, one eye of patients having bilateral PRK received one drop of cyclopentole post PRK and NO cyclopentloate drop in the fellow eye. Postoperatively, patients were asked to rate the perceived pain in each eye using the global subjective visual analog scale through 10-points numeric pain scale at 8 occasions 2 ,7,12,22,29,36,51 and 59 hours post operatively.

Results:

Forty three patients (86 eyes) with myopia and/or astigmatism were enrolled in the study. Nineteen Patients were excluded from the study due to poor compliance with post operative medications , lack of proper pain record documentation or alcohol leak during PRK. Mean pain score recorded for eyes with cyclopentolate eyedrop were 4.2,3.9,3,2.2,2,2.8,2.1 and 1.5 in 2,7,12,22,,29,36,51and 59 hours respectively . whereas mean pain score recorded for eyes without cyclopentolate eyedrop were 3.7,4.4,3.2,2.2,2.2,2.9,2.2 and 2. The difference between the two groups was not statically significant.

Conclusions:

Cyclopentolate eyedrops does not seem to have pain relieving effect after PRK as a singe dose post PRK.
