Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the result of treatment for residual refractive errors after MFIOL implantation after previous corneal refractive surgery.

Setting:

Private refractive surgery clinic: Retina Total Eye Care, Driebergen, affiliated with the Department of Ophthalmology Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam, the The Netherlands.

Methods:

Single-centre consecutive cohort of patients treated for a residual refractive error after multifocal IOL implantation and previous laser refractive surgery between 2008-2015. Primary outcome measures are initial refractive error and visual acuity, refractive and visual outcomes. Secondary outcomes are complications and patient satisfaction.

Results:

The mean refractive spherical equivalent error was -0.983D±4.274 D SD. Mean UCDA improved from 0.34 Logmar to 0.07 Logmar. Mean refractive error improved from -0.54 D ±1.32 D SD to 0.205D ±0.51D. In 27 eyes a LASEK on the flap was done, and in 9 patients a LASIK flap re-lift was performed. In 2 eyes an IOL exchange was done, in which 50% needed a laser touch up afterwards. Complications were seen in 3 eyes, of which 1 was a corneal ulcer, and 2 were related to epithelial ingrowth at the LASIK flap edge.

Conclusions:

Treatment of residual refractive errors after implantation of a MFIOL after previous corneal after surgery yields good visual and refractive outcomes. Complications occur more often (18 %) in LASIK flap lift than in LASEK (4%)on the flap procedures. From our data it seems safer to retreat a residual refractive error with a LASEK on the flap as compared to a LASIK flap re-lift. Overall, most patient had a good result in terms of visual and refractive outcomes.
