Purpose:
To report the visual and refractive outcomes of customized topography-guided corneal ablations with photorefractive keratectomy (T-CAT PRK) for myopia and astigmatism treatment in primary eyes.
Setting:
CUF Porto; Hospital de Braga; Universidade do Minho
Methods:
Patients with a spherical equivalent of -6,0D or below, submitted to PRK between October 2016 and October 2017 with a minimum follow-up of 6 months. Preoperative corneal topography was obtained with the Topolyzer Vario (Alcon Wavelight, Erlangen, Germany) to calculate the ablations profile. The planned topography-guided ablation profile was applied using the excimer laser EX500 (Alcon Wavelight, Erlangen, Germany). Parameters evaluated were uncorrected/corrected visual acuity and subjective refraction.
Results:
Study included 40 eyes of 20 patients, mean age 27,0 ± 4,15. The T-CAT PRK effectively reduced the spherical equivalent from -2.63 ± 0.21 D to -0.10 ± -0.33 D at 6 months. 96 % of eyes had a SE within ± 0,50 D. 30% of eyes achieved UCVA of 20/16 and 98% of 20/20. 74% of eyes showed no change of lines, 2% of eyes lost lines of BCVA and 5% gained 2 or more lines of BCVA. No intraoperative or postoperative complications were reported.
Conclusions:
T-CAT PRK ablation profile showed to be an effective and a safe procedure for myopia and astigmatism in primary eyes. The possibility to address the high order aberrations observed in the cornea of normal eyes allowed significantly better visual outcomes when compared to any conventional ablation profile reported for PRK treatments for myopia and astigmatism.
