Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate epithelial profile pattern in patients undergoing Trans PRK / alcohol assisted PRK using anterior segment OCT (Optical coherence Tomography) epithelial profile mapping.

Setting:

Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital, Bangalore, Karnataka,India

Methods:

A Prospective, Non-randomized, comparative clinical study was done. Adult patients with Low to moderate myopia less than 6D [Spherical Equivalent] were included. The Patients were divided in two groups 20 eyes with low to moderate myopia which underwent Trans PRK were included in group A. 20 eyes with low to moderate myopia which underwent alcohol assisted PRK were included in group B. Epithelial thickness measured with anterior segment OCT was documented at 15 days, 30 days, 3 and 6 months post operatively.

Results:

The average epithelial thickness in the Trans PRK group at 3months in the 5 mm zone and 6mm mm optical zone was 54.63±2.92microns and 57.13±2.79microns respectively, as compared to alcohol assisted PRK group which was 62.30±4.16 microns and 64.23±4.25 microns. The average thickness at 6 months was 47.13±2.19 & 50.70±2.22 in the 5 and 6 mm optical zone in the Trans PRK group as compared to 52.97±1.88 & 55.40±2.03 in the alcohol assisted PRK group. A significant higher epithelial thickness was found in the alcohol assisted PRK as compared to the Trans PRK group

Conclusions:

The thicker epithelium may result in regression in the alcohol assisted PRK as compared to Trans PRK group. Patients undergoing retreatment with PRK, different thickness in epithelium can result in errors, hence alcohol assisted PRK would be a better option in retreatment.
