Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present a case of PMMA IOL snowflake degeneration and subsequent IOL exchange in a young patient. To discuss the original presentation with congenital cataracts, subsequent presentation 15 years later with IOL snowflake degeneration, management with lens exchange and laboratory lens analysis.

Setting:

St. Thomas's Hospital London

Methods:

This is a case presentation with retrospective review of the case notes for original presentation with congenital cataracts with prospective follow up, photographs of presentation and laboratory analysis of the removed IOL. Patient is a 17 year old male who presented to the clinic of one of the authors with progressive visual loss 15 years after initial IOL implantation.

Results:

Progressive visual loss due to snowflake degeneration of the PMMA 15 years after PMMA IOL implantation Patient underwent PMMA lens removal and IOL exchange with anterior vitrectomy. 3 months later the patient was reviewed with improved visual acuity. Laboratory analysis of the IOL confirmed snowflake degeneration

Conclusions:

The case demonstrates Snowflake Degeneration of PMMA IOLs as a cause of progressive visual loss several years after implantation. Management of which requires IOL exchange with expectations for excellent visual acuity.
