Purpose:
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) offers improved resolution and quicker acquisition time over Scheimpflug based systems. These factors could lead to improved repeatability and greater sensitivity in detecting disease progression in keratoconus. Here we present measurement repeatability data for the MS-39, a new OCT device (CSO, Firenze, Italy) vs. the Pentacam HR (Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany).

Methods:
3 consecutive tomography scans were acquired for 131 eyes (77 patients) on both the Pentacam and MS-39 in patients under active monitoring for keratoconus progression (Mean K2 50.4D±6.82). Random-effects ANOVA was used to derive a standard deviation within measures and limits of repeatability for the corneal tomography indices Anterior K2 (D), Kmax (D) and thinnest pachymetry (µm).
Results:
Mean ± standard deviation (SD) anterior K2 was 50.3 ± 6.8 D (range 41.1 – 75.3 D). For the Pentacam, the 95% repeatability coefficient for anterior K2 was 1.43 D, Kmax 2.43 D and thinnest pachymetry 62.4 µm. For the MS-39, the 95% repeatability coefficient for anterior K2 was 2.95 D, Kmax 6.48 D and for thinnest pachymetry 64.8 µm.
Conclusions:
Early results suggest that the Scheimpflug-based Pentacam offers tighter repeatability when compared to the MS-39 in patients with Keratoconus.
