Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report 12 months results of refractive lenticule extraction through a small incision (ReLEx SMILE) for correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism.

Setting:

Prasad netralaya Private super speciality tertiary eye hospital

Methods:

80 eyes of 40 patients with spherical equivalent of -3.15 ± 1.47 D who underwent routine ReLEx SMILE by a single surgeon were Prospectively followed-up for 12 months. We used the VisuMax femtosecond laser system (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Germany) with a 500 kHz repetition rate. Follow-up intervals were at 1 day, 1 week, 1, 3, 6 months and 12 months after surgery. Following parameters were taken: incision size (4 mm), uncorrected (UDVA) and distance-corrected visual acuity (CDVA), contrast sensitivity, and wave front measurements were noted. We also recorded all complications noted during surgery

Results:

Presence of suction loss, flap tear, lenticule tear and incomplete dissection noticed in 2eyes,12 months results were obtained in 76 eyes.In these 83% of eyes with plano target had an UDVA of 20/20 or better.12% of eyes lost 1 line of CDVA, while 26% gained 1 line and 2% gained 2 lines. The mean SE after 12 months was -0.31 ± 0.17. The mean refraction change between month6 and 12months was 0.11 D.The high-order aberrations (HOA) increased from 0.16 to 0.32 μm (WASCA analyser) and the mean spherical aberrations changed from 0.311 to 0.439 at 6mm pupil (VISANTE ASOCT).Residual error remained in 1patient

Conclusions:

ReLEx SMILE produced exceptional refractive outcomes with moderate induction of HOA and unaffected contrast sensitivity after12 months.
