Abstract Details
Purpose:
To examine whether small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for myopia induces corneal astigmatism.
Setting:
Department of ophthalmology, Aarhus University Hospital
Methods:
A total of 346 eyes (175 right eyes) of 346 patients (119 female) were treated for myopia without concurrent astigmatism. SMILE was performed with a 500 kHz Visumax femtosecond laser. Patients were examined before and 3 months after surgery with autorefraction, subjective refraction, and Pentacam HD. Cylinder data was evaluated by vector analysis.
Results:
Average preoperative spherical equivalent refraction was -7.34 +/- 1.44D, mean preoperative subjective cylinder was -0.05 +/- 0.11D, while the mean keratometric cylinder was -0.53 +/- 0.31D. The mean postoperative spherical equivalent refraction was -0.29 +/- 0.47D, subjective cylinder averaged -0.36 +/- 0.34D and the mean keratometric cylinder was 0.74 +/- 0.44D.
Using vector analysis an average surgically induced keratometric astigmatism of 0.42 +/- 0.28D @95 degrees was observed (p<0.001), similar to an induced subjective astigmatism of 0.36 +/- 0.33D @97 degrees.
Conclusions:
Correction of myopia with SMILE induces approximately 0.40 D of with-the-rule astigmatism.
