Abstract Details
Purpose:
To study the effect of hyaluronic acid on incidence of post cataract ptosis. The use of hyaluronidase can alter the effects of local anesthetic; it acts to increase the spread of anesthetic between tissue planes by action of hyaluronic acid.No study has previously directly evaluated the effects of hyaluronidase on postoperative ptosis.
Setting:
Safdarjung hopsital, new delhi, india over a period of one and a half year
Methods:
A total of 200 eyes of 200 patients fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled in this randomized, double masked study and underwent phacoemulsification with PCIOL implantation by the same surgeon. Patients were divided into group A(who recieved peribulbar block contianing hyaluronidase) and group B (peribulbar block without hyaluronidase) and evaluation of marginal reflex distance, vertical fissure height was done preoperatively and 1st day, 3rd day, 1week, 1 month, and 3 months post operatively quantitavely and photographically. Data was analysed in SPSS. P value <0.05 was considered significant.
Results:
Incidence of post cataract ptosis was higher in group A patients as compared to group B significantly (p=0.02) on day 1, day 3, post operatively.
Conclusions:
The use of hyaluronidase can alter the effects of local anesthetic and increase the incidence of poat cataract ptosis
