Abstract Details

Purpose:

To discuss the difficulties and results of cataract surgery on previously vitrectomised eyes.

Setting:

University of Pecs, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology

Methods:

The exact history is very important; how long ago the vitrectomy was performed, what was its reason, what surgical technique was used and what the result of vitrectomy was.

Results:

Deep and unsteady anterior chamber makes the surgery difficult, as well as the rock-hard cataract in some cases, which has to be removed very cautiously by the chop technique. Lack of vitreous affects the whole surgical procedure, eyes filled up with silicon oil are special challenge. Primary posterior capsule fibrosis may also occur. Choosing the right PC-IOL and its „in-the-bag” implantation is also important.

Conclusions:

The functional result of cataract surgery will be greatly influenced by the condition of the retina. The surgical steps and difficulties will be demonstrated by video.
