Abstract Details
Purpose:
The uses of multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) during cataract surgeries are increasing. But, we don’t know exactly how the patients with multifocal IOLs see the far and near objects. We developed a mobile model eye and simulated how the patients with multifocal IOLs see the far objects outside and near objects in the laboratory.
Setting:
Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospital, Chuncheon, Korea (the Republic of)
Methods:
We made a new mobile model eye with a CMOS camera, iris, wet chamber, and intraocular lens (IOL) mounting system. We tested one monofocal IOL as a control and three diffractive multifocal IOLs (A,B,C). In the laboratory, we tested multifocal function of the IOLs by approaching a near target to model eye from 2m distance. We recorded the far objects with model eye in the fields.
Results:
Monofocal IOL showed no multifocal function in laboratory test. In the fields, far objects were clear and there was no halo. Multifocal IOL A showed definite multifocal function in the laboratory test. But, there was a halo around the characters in the target. In the fields, far objects were clear and there was no halo. Multifocal IOL B,C showed definite multifocal function in the laboratory test and there was no halo. In the fields, far objects were clear but there was definite halo around far objects.
Conclusions:
We confirmed definite multifocal function of diffractive multifocal IOLs using a new mobile model eye in this experiment. Depending on the diffractive IOLS, we found halo around near objects or far objects.
