Abstract Details
Purpose:
To quantify the performance of three presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses based on the mathematical analysis of defocus curves
Setting:
Institut Ophtalmique de Somain, France
Methods:
A computer program was specially developed to analyze and evaluate defocus curve data on presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses. An algorithm is used to calculate the area as a function of the curves, according to the visual acuity and/or reading range thresholds which were pre-defined or freely chosen by the investigator. Defocus curves from published data have been entered in the mathematical model for three multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) using different optical solutions: one trifocal IOL, one sector-shaped refractive IOL and one EDOF IOL .
Results:
With a predefined superior threshold at 0 LogMar and a defocus from 0 to -3D, area over the defocus curve were respectively 21.7 for the trifocal IOL, 25.7 for the refractive IOL and 49.3 for the EDOF IOL (area x 100), 0 being the best theoretical performance. Performance may be also quantified according to reading range. For the 3 IOLs, results were respectively 0.5, 2.4 and 1.0 for distant vision (defocus 0 to -0.50D), 2.6, 2.2 and 5.0 for intermediate vision (defocus -1.25 to -1.75D) and 7.3, 8.8 and 21.2 for near vision (defocus -2.50 to -3D)
Conclusions:
The proposed mathematical model enables quantitative analysis of presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens performance, based on defocus curves. Wide-scale use of this model may allow performance indicators to be proposed according to a standard method.
