Abstract Details

Purpose:

Defocus curves graphically display depth of focus, which is used to evaluate the function and efficacy of multifocal implant lenses. Comparing the defocus curves of different lenses is difficult, unless they are displayed in the same graph. In this study we explored a mathematical model comparing of the defocus curves of multifocal IOLs using a single numerical parameter: the defocus coefficient.

Setting:

Private clinic, Amsterdam, the The Netherlands, and Research Laboratories, Hanita Lenses, Israel.

Methods:

The area under the graph was calculated for the defocus curves of different IOLs. Defocus curves were obtained from peer-reviewed publications, reconstructed and used for calculation, and from the defocus curves in our own database. The IOLs used for the theoretical comparison were the SN6AD3, AT LISA 366D, SN6AD1, SeeLens MF, PanOptix, FineVision, and AT LISA 839MP trifocal IOLs.

Results:

The defocus curves between +1D and -3.0D in logMAR notation were used. The area under the curves was calculated using approximated polynomials of the 11th order. The area under the defocus graph is expressed as a single numerical parameter, proportional to the calculated defocus functionality of the IOL. Lower values of the parameter indicate a better defocus functionality of the multifocal IOL.

Conclusions:

The Lapid-Kushlin defocus coefficient for the area under the graph allows comparison of the defocus curve functionality of multifocal IOLs. This parameter will enable clinicians to perform a fast, qualitative and easy comparison between different multifocal IOLs. A lower defocus coefficient signifies better defocus curve functionality.
