Abstract Details
Purpose:
Clinical evaluation of optical phenomena after implantation of different monofocal and multifocal IOLs after cataract or refractive surgery.
Setting:
International Vision Correction Research Centre (IVCRC), Department of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany.
Methods:
In this ongoing prospective clinical study, 76 patients were examined binocularly: 8 patients with CT Asphina (Carl Zeiss Meditec), 6 patients with Aspira MC 6125 AS (HumanOptics), 11 patients with Tecnis Symfony (AMO), 31 patients with MiniWell (SIFI Medtech), 14 patients with AcrySof IQ PanOptix (Alcon), and 6 patients with AT LISA tri (Carl Zeiss Meditec). Both the size and intensity of the photic phenomena were examined using a computer-based simulator (Halo and Glare Simulator, Eyeland Design Network GmbH, Vreden, Germany) and evaluated on a scale of 0 to 100.
Results:
In terms of halo size and intensity, PanOptix(size:36.5±18.5,int.:50.6±17.7), Symfony(size:35.5±22.0,int.:50±27.8) and AT LISA tri(size:33.2±9.5,int.:45.3±19.1) IOLs showed the highest mean values. Lowest mean values for halo were recorded for CT Asphina(size:5.6±10.5,int.:10.8±20.4) and MiniWell(size:20.3±21.9,int.:27.2±26.0). Concerning the glare size, the highest mean values were measured for Symfony(22.0±21.4) and AT LISA tri(19.7±13.8). Highest mean values for glare intensity were measured for Symfony(37.5±20.3), CT Asphina(35.3±22.1) and AT LISA tri(36.4±22.4). Lowest mean values for glare size were recorded for CT Asphina(10.3±9.9) and MiniWell(13.8±13.9) and for glare intensity for Aspira(26.2±25.0).
Conclusions:
Our results show that the IOLs based on the diffractive optical principle (PanOptix, AT LISA tri, Symfony) showed higher values in terms of halo and glare intensity and size. Lowest values were recorded with monofocal lenses (CT Asphina, Aspira) as well as MiniWell EDOF IOLs which employ different asphericities of the optic to generate multifocality, not diffractive or purely refractive principles.
