Purpose:
The aim of this study is to evaluate the optical quality and Halo&Glare perception in pseudophakic patients implanted with different intraocular lenses (IOL) Models compared to cataract patients.
Setting:

Methods:
In a prospective study, including 67 patients so far, we included a group of 19 phakic patients with cataractous opacified lens and patients who received either binocular implantation of a trifocal IOL, one of two different enhanced depth of focus (EDOF) IOLs or a monofocal IOL.
We included patients who received a Mix&Match approach with an EDOF IOL in the distance dominant eye and trifocal IOL in the near dominant eye.
We evaluated subjective refraction, visual acuity, photic phenomena and optical quality using the Halo & Glare Simulator (Carl Zeiss Meditech, Germany) and the HD Analyzer (Visiometrics, USA).
Results:
In the pseudophakic patients, the best mean strength of Halo&Glare was found in the monofocal group 23,82%.
Cataract patients show a significant amount of photic phenomena in all occurrences with a mean strength value of 35,77%.
The HD Analyzer results in the mix and match group were analyzed separately. We found the best mean values of the OSI (1,43+/-0,67) in the EDOF group, and MTF cut off (38,175+/-11,742) in the trifocal group. The Strehl Ratio results showed a superiority of the trifocal IOL with the highest value of 0,22+/-0,07, and the lowest value in the EDOF group 0,12+/-0,03.
Conclusions:
Photic phenomena and decrease in optical quality remain the main challenge in premium lens surgery.
The evaluation of visual side effects and optical quality in patients with different IOL models compared to cataract patients shows closest results of photic phenomena with latest IOL models to monofocal IOLs. However, the visual quality differs greatly between different groups.
It is an ongoing study, and more patients are scheduled for an exploration visit, in order to have homogeneous groups with similar numbers of participants.
