Abstract Details
Purpose:
to determine the pattern of ocular Injuries at Department of Ophthalmology, Gondar University Hospital
Setting:
The study was conducted at Department of Ophthalmology, Gondar University Hospital, Amhara region, North West Ethiopia.
Methods:
a prospective study was conducted from April 2015 to March 2016 using a standardized structured data extraction format on patients presenting with ocular Injury. Ocular Injury was classified based on Birmingham Eye Trauma Terminology System. Data was collected by ophthalmic residents and checked by the principal investigator for completeness, accuracy and coded and entered into EPI Info version7. Data was processed & analyzed using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences version 21.
Results:
186 patients were enrolled with 192 eyes sustaining ocular injury. Majority 80.6% were males and from the rural areas(69%). Median age was 24 years (range 2 to 75 years). Fighting (31.1%) was the commonest reason for ocular injury. Half of the patients were injured by stick (30.7%) and stone (18.3%). More than 50% presented after 24 hours of injury. Lack of knowledge (37%) and delayed referral from health centers (28.2%) were the main reasons for delayed presentation.Closed globe injuriy was the commonest (67.7% ). Light perception was commonest presenting visual acuity in both right (44%) and left eyes(42%).
Conclusions:
Late presentation of patients after sustaining ocular injury due to lack of knowledge and delayed referral by health institutes is the main reason for the presentation of patients with visual impairment/blindness. It is recommendable to design primary preventive methods using different health promotion activities as part of primary eye care program
