Abstract Details
Purpose:
To describe the early experience in terms of visual outcomes and quality of vision of a new continuous transitional focus (CTF) intraocular lens (IOL) (Precizon Presbyopia, Ophtec, The The Netherlands).
Setting:
Institut de Microcirurgia Ocular, Barcelona, Spain.
Methods:
Retrospective case series of patients undergoing cataract extraction or refractive lens exchange followed by bilateral implantation of a CTF IOL. Manifest refraction and corrected and uncorrected distance, intermediate, and near visual acuity were evaluated preoperatively and 1 month postoperatively. The incidence of intraoperative and postoperative complications was also recorded. Quality of vision by means of Ocular Scatter Index (OSI) measurement with the HD Analyzer (Visiometrics, Parc Tecnologic del Valles, Cerdanyola, Spain) and patient satisfaction were also studied.
Results:
The study included 30 eyes of 15 patients. Mean age was 60.43 ± 7.44. One month postoperatively, mean spherical equivalent (SE) refraction was -0.34 ± 0.42 diopters (D). Seventy-six percent of eyes and 100% of eyes were within ± 0.50 D and ± 1.00 D of intended correction, respectively. Mean postoperative LogMAR uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) was 0.21 ± 0.18. All patients achieved unaided distance, intermediate and near visual acuity of 20/40 or better postoperatively. No intraoperative complications were noted. None of the patients complained of haloes, and patient satisfaction was high in the vast majority of patients. Mean OSI was 1.4 0.75.
Conclusions:
Early experience with this new CTF IOL provides adequate functional uncorrected visual acuity at distance, intermediate and near in the vast majority of patients. Subjective patient satisfaction and quality of vision evaluated with the HD Analyzer was excellent in most cases. However, suboptimal corrected distance vision was seen in two patients. Longer term follow up is needed to fully evaluate the lens.
