Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the visual outcome after bilateral implantation of the Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) intraocular lens (IOL) MINI WELL Ready (SIFI Medtech, Catania, Italy).
Setting:
The Medical City, Ortigas Avenue, Pasig City, Metro Manila, Philippines
Methods:
Twenty-two patients (44 eyes), who underwent phacoemulsification cataract surgery, were implanted with EDOF MINI WELL Ready (SIFI Medtech). At 2-8 days (T1) and at 60-90 days (T2) from surgery, monocular and binocular visual acuity (VA) was tested as follows: uncorrected VA for distance (UDVA), intermediate (UIVA) and near (UNVA); and distance-corrected VA for far (CDVA), intermediate (DCIVA) and near (DCNVA). In addition, binocular defocus curve, distance and near contrast sensitivity (CS), photic phenomena (distribution of halo, starburst and glare) and Quality of Vision (QOV Questionnaire) were evaluated.
Results:
Mean (±SD) binocular UDVA, UIVA and UNVA at T2 were 0.10 (±0.07), 0.10 (±0.06) and 0.15 (±0.11) logMAR respectively; while mean (±SD) binocular CDVA, DCIVA and DCNVA at T2 were 0.15 (±0.07), 0.09 (±0.05) and 0.10 (±0.09) logMAR, respectively.
Binocular defocus curve revealed VA ≤ 0.3 logMAR from +2D to >−3.5 D. The mean size of halo and glare were 31.2 (±12,7) and 23.4 (±12,2), respectively. Far and near mean monocular CS (±SD) were 1.59 (±0.09) logCS, while mean binocular distance and near CS were 1.75 (±0.11) logCS and 1.78 (±0.11) logCS, respectively. Mean total QOV score was 88.9.
Conclusions:
Implantation with progressive EDOF MINI WELL Ready (SIFI Medtech) provided an excellent postoperative VA outcome for far and intermediate distance (e.g. computer); and a very good vision outcome for near distance. In addition, the MINI WELL Ready IOLs showed an outstanding CS with a binocular logCS values, comparable to that of a healthy population aged between 20-39 years old. Because of these features, and of a very low level of halo and glare phenomena, the MINI WELL Ready implantation provided a high degree of patient’s satisfaction and represents, for the surgeon, an optimal choice in the cataract surgery routine.
